Dear Ms. Shady,

Your scaring me!!! Please do not attempt to use a Dremel Drill without the proper education. This can be an extremely dangerous thing. As easy as it may look on paper you can seriously damage your nails and the surrounding skin. Dremel Drills should be saved for small jobs around the house. If you really want to invest in a drill consider purchasing one that is approved for ';Fingernail'; use only. Applying acrylic without having the proper knowledge can be very tricky. As a professional I suggest that you save your money on all the supplies and find a good licensed nail technician that can do your nails. In the long run you will save your aggravation and time. Stay away from those ';discount'; salons because the product they use is very damaging to the nails. As for recommending supplies...it's all about what you prefer. Nail brushes range from flat, round, pointed, small large and every size in between. Your choices will be limited considering that you are not a licensed professional. so you will have to stick with whatever products are sold publicly.

If you are that interested in doing your own nails, press-on nails look great or check out nail schools in the area. Best of luck to you!
well dont buy out of a drug store those do no good go to sallys beauty supply store it is a beauty product store the same ones used in saloons but it is open to the public they will have all the supplies you need
its hard to do them yourself and have them end up perfect like at a salon .you need olot of practice.

you can get all the products you need at walgreens or sallys i prefer walgreens just ask someone there and they'll help you.

I would think acrylic paint would be the simplest.

What is the difference between oil paints and the acrylic paint in a tube?

Which one looks nicer? Which one is easier to learn to paint with? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each? Thanks. What is the difference between oil paints and the acrylic paint in a tube?
ok oil paints - oil based, need turps or white spirit to clean up brushes etc, takes ages to dry but that can be good if you're working in details. can be thinned to create washes, long lasting (think old masters!) shiny finish. only use on board, wood, or canvas really and they tend to be more expensive because of the ingredients.

acrylic paints - water based, dry overnight if used thick so ok for most needs, can be thinned with water, can be used on paper, board, canvas, plastic and just about anywhere really. good for starting cos they're cheaper.

learning to paint is not something you do with one medium and hey presto you can paint in all of them. acrylics handle one way, oils another, pastels another, water colours another ecetera. oils and acrylic have some overlap because they are both gloopy out of the tube, but you're going to make a muddy mess if you approach oil painting like acrylic painting. ask for a small set of each for your birthday and experiment - it's really a personal choice :)What is the difference between oil paints and the acrylic paint in a tube?
They look different, acrylic paints come out brighter while oil paints look muted. Acrylic paint is easier to use if you're just starting, and it's also cheaper. Acrylic paint dries in a few minutes while oil paint takes weeks to dry. Also, you can paint on any surface with acrylics while oils limit you to expensive canvas.

How long should my natural nails be before getting acrylic nails put on?

My nails are super short. (i mean really really short). I'm a bad nail biter. And I'm going to the sports banquet for my school this week and also my graduation next week. I want my nails to look really nice and pretty, but idk if i can get acrylic nails beacuse my natural nails are soooo short.

Also, how long will acrylic nails last? How long should my natural nails be before getting acrylic nails put on?
Your real nail should be really short before you put on fake nails. I mean really, really short, lolz!!!! Here are some tips on how not to bite your fingernails:

1.Hold on to a small object, such as a stone or ball, to keep your hands busy and out of your mouth

    2. Coat your nail with a special bad-tasting polish, available at the drugstore.

    3. Set up a reward system. Use a calender to keep track of how many days you go without giving in to your habit, and give yourself a treat if you meet your goal.

Fake nails usually last about 2 weeks (less if you keep playing with them). Just be sure you follow those rules on how not to bite your nail and trust me... you'll be fine. ( I was a big nail biter.. but now i'm not cause of those 3 easy steps!!!!!!!!)

Hope I helped:)How long should my natural nails be before getting acrylic nails put on?

it doesnt matter the length of your nails. I have a really bad habbit of biting my nail, and i got acrylics put on yesterday, they look really good!

The nails can last forever, it depends. If one rips off, then you just go and get that one fixed. And every so often you need to get them filled. GOOD LUCK!
ur nails dont have to be that long chinese people can work sum miracles with short nails and acrylic but acrylic lasts longer than solar but i prefer solar because its prettier but it costs more for solar acrylic is thicker thats why it last so long
    It shouldnt pass your thumb.
acrylic can last a long time u jus have to keep them up.. and llooking good and getting them done every other weeek.. but u might have to go to shop and ask them if your nails are too short.
well it really doesnt matter i bite my nail short %26amp;%26amp; get fake nails (well i get gel) but i would say that your real nails will grow faster since their so short %26amp;%26amp; you would have to get fill in soon

How can I clean up or restore an old acrylic painting?

The paintings were done by my grandmother in the 70s and 80s with acrylic paint. I'm familiar with oil paints but not acrylics and Ihave no idea how to safely remove the dust, mold, mildew and other dirt on the paintings. They're not worth anything financially, just sentimental. Any suggestions? How can I clean up or restore an old acrylic painting?
Do this at your own risk. I have cleaned many with a mild ammonia/soap solution then placed the painting in sunlight to bring back the colors especially the whites, about an hour. After, if there is some flaking, cracks, you can use a transparent glaze or gel then a varnish over top. All these bought at your local shop. How can I clean up or restore an old acrylic painting?
Very carefully. I've worked as an exhibit assistant at various art galleries and a museum, and my best advice is get a book on art conservation from the library. If that's not possible, look the topic up on Google and see what you can find. They will probably tell you, use a very soft CLEAN dry paint brush or cotton balls or Q-tips to remove as much surface dirt as slowly as you can. Then, they may suggest a gentle moist Q-tip cleaning. But the condition of the art needs to be assesed first. If the paint is flaking or chipped any where- DO NOT get it wet or clean the chipped area, as you may accidentally remove paint.

How do you get a shiny finish to an acrylic painting?

    I just started painting and it bugs me that when my painting is done it doesnt have a glossy/shiny finish. I feel like its ';undone.';

Is there something you can buy to put over the acrylic paint to give it a shiny finish? How do you get a shiny finish to an acrylic painting?
clear varnishHow do you get a shiny finish to an acrylic painting?
I use a clear gloss varnish..it comes in a bottle and you paint it on. It has a pretty strong odor so do it outside or somewhere it won't bother everyone. You can clean it up with paint thinner. I really love it, it brings back the vivid colors of the acrylics.
I like to use the clear varnish spray by Krylon. I prefer the UV protective kind...But if you decide to use it, follow the directions carefully, especially using a ventilated area and using a mask so as to not breathe the fumes..It dries in about an hour, and gives my paintings a nice finish.

How do women and mothers cope with these long acrylic nails?

I see these women constantly, they work and have two children at home, and the longest acrylic nails possible. How do they cope with housework and staff? How do women and mothers cope with these long acrylic nails?
I agree with you. Its really ridiculous and a health issue. I mean how to do wipe with nails that long... Very carefully I would imagine. lolHow do women and mothers cope with these long acrylic nails?
they can be use 2 them but my nail was not 2 long as U say but I no that when they wipe there butt u no what get on their nails that I no.
I used to wear acrylic nails, but they played havoc with my own. My own nails now are quite long, I work and have 2 children......I dont know about acrylics, but for me personally I dont know, I just am able to use my hands like that. I do remember though when I was first growing them and it was VERY difficult.....but like everything, you adjust , hope thats helps anyway :)
    I've always thought the nails were tacky. The designs are lovely, but I don't see WHY they want nails that long! If they are trying to say ';I have wealth, look at my nails'; they are seriously missing some muffins from the breadbasket. To me, nails like that say ';I'm ghetto-fab!';

Usually with nails that long, you CAN'T do housework. They poke holes in gloves, get in the way of the most minimal of tasks and hurt if you jab at someone or yourself (intentionally or accidentally). It takes someone with a lot of dexterity and determination to keep them as well as a home clean and happy. No thanks. I like my short ones. I can chew on them and not be afraid of being poisoned.
I would love to know myself! Especially since so much of our work these days is done on the computer and we need to use our fingers for typing...

Also, it's so easy to scratch one's child with long fingernails.

I'll be watching your answers and giving you a star for something I have often wondered about myself!
I have no idea but I wonder also. When I'm at work this 1 lady comes in and she can barely hold her pen, go through her purse, pick things up .. and she has kids! I always ask my co-workers, I wonder how she wipes her - you know what. I just don't get it!!!!!! If you can't function right, then they're too long!
they are just use to them...they are put on pretty tight so its not like they just pop off, although they can...but its really going to hurt!!
They're probably just used to them. When my son was about 5 months old I got acrylics, but not very long. I couldn't stand them, I could hardly change a diaper. Off they went and I never have had them since!!

How do you tell the difference between Glass and Acrylic beads?

Please? Without having to break them. How do you tell the difference between Glass and Acrylic beads?
It's really hard to tell just by looking. The acrylic ones are really nice, some of them anyway, and look just like glass. The easiest way to tell the difference is the weight. Acrylic beads are much lighter-weight than are glass ones. Another simple test is temperature. Glass beads, when you first pick them up, will be much cooler than acrylic ones. After being in your hand for a few seconds, glass beads will warm up a bit. The acrylic ones don't change temperature as quickly, either. How do you tell the difference between Glass and Acrylic beads?
Differences to tell between the 2 could be:

Weigh them - acrylic is lighter.

Try burning one - acrylic will burn

Glass is harder than acrylic will scratch a plastic sheet if dragged over it.

settling test in a viscous liquid, glass will settle quicker due to its weight

if you have a container of each, try smelling them, acrylic as its own distinctive smell

refractive index is different but may be difficult to measure

acrylic will soften if placed in a suitable solvent

    Hope these help
Give them the squeak test. Glass will squeak when forced together in the palm of your hand the same way glass marbles do. Acrylic does not have the same properties to make that tell tale squeak.
Click them against your teeth! You will quickly be able to tell glass from any type of acrylic or plastic.

  • What is the step by step process of getting acrylic nails?

I'm getting acrylic nails for the first time in 2 days %26amp; I really want to know what to expect.. (Detailed answers please)

So what are the steps of getting them? From the moment you sit in the chair til they are finished what does the tech do?

Thanks to anyone who answers! What is the step by step process of getting acrylic nails?
Too many steps involved to type in. So, just watch this video. This is how they are supposed to be done:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Omon9ccUK鈥?/a>

I can tell you some things to look out for. One is never let a nail tech use a drill on your natural nail. As you saw in the video, only a gentle hand filing is needed to remove the shine off of your nails for proper adhesion of the acrylic to your nails. If you are paying like $15-$25 for a full set, the chances are quite good you are going to a place we nails techs commonly refer to as 'discount' salons. These places are the ones that will more often than not use a Dremel drill on your natural nails. A drill should never be used on your natural nails, ever. And, a Dremel is NOT made for use on nails. But they use them anyway. Do not let them do this. If they do, just leave and find a better tech to do your nails. For more info, watch this video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rlmptKm4鈥?/a>

Also, the full set should take at least an hour - or more to complete. Discount salons skip many steps and do it in about a half hour

Remember, nail services should NEVER hurt, or cause you any pain at all - not during, or after you get your nails done. If they are causing you ANY discomfort, leave there immediately. That is a sign of an unqualified, unskilled tech.

Another thing they do - and you need to watch out for this - is that they will usually use dirty files and sanding bands on you which have also been used on other dustomers. This is an easy way to get a nasty infection, or even a disease. Also, look out for them using implements such as nippers which have not been properly disinfected. Do they pull them out of a drawer, where they are stored with other dirty tools? Or do they take them out of a disinfectant solution, wipe them, and then use them on you? Do not let anyone use dirty implements on you. Also, when they use any files on you, look at them closely before they start to use them. Do you notice any white color dust on them? If so, they have been used on others already. In short, they are dirty, and this is against the law in most states. Discount salons do not care one bit about the law, or about you either. They just want your money. Period.

Choose your salon/tech carefully. Your health is at risk. I'm quite serious about that. Watch these for more info. This is no laughing matter:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Hu7BLbl3鈥?/a>

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctld8mTZo鈥?/a>

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVqujA_iI鈥?/a>

And never, ever think about getting a pedicure at these places. If you watched the videos, you will know why. What is the step by step process of getting acrylic nails?
it will probably go something like this -

they will file and buff your nails, then cut a small piece of material to place on top of your nail, glue it down, put some more goop or gel on top of that, and file it down until it is smooth. Most places use a machine drill type of thing to help file it down to make the process a little faster, and the nails smoother. Then finish with the polish.

I just posted a question about the Light-Concept manicure. If they offer it by you, maybe you should look into it. It does not damage your nail supposedly like regular wraps / acrylics do. I never had that done (light Concept), so I am curious about it as well.
they complete mess ur nails up underneath. they get soft, yellow, and thin

How to remove acrylic paint from clothes?

I have gray-silver jeans (99% cotton and 1% elastane) and I accidentally spilled acrylic paint on them. Is there a solution I can buy (or make if i really have to) to get it off? Bleach fades the color of the jeans to white so I don't want to use it. I also heard that you can take it to the dry cleaners to remove it.How to remove acrylic paint from clothes?
Copied this from an article I wrote recently. Hope it helps!

    Step 1:

Fill a sink with water (make sure it鈥檚 a sink that won鈥檛 need to be used for a while). Add 2 tbsp. ammonia, 2 tbsp. vinegar and 1 tbsp. salt. Place the stained fabric in the sink with the solution and allow it to soak overnight. If there are areas where the paint is really thick it helps to scrub with a brush dipped in the solution before soaking it. Launder the fabric as usual in the morning.

    Step 2:

Apply mineral spirits to a clean white cloth and rub the area free of paint. Launder as usual once the paint has been removed.

    Step 3:

Apply a small amount of Pine Sol to the stain and scrub with an old toothbrush. Apply more Pine Sol as needed and continue scrubbing until all of the stain is gone. Launder as usual.

    Step 4:

Spray the stained area with WD-40 and allow it to sit for at least 1 minute. Rub the area with a clean, dry cloth until the stain is gone, and launder as usual.

    Step 5:

Spray the paint stain with Windex and scrub the area gently with a soft, clean cloth before laundering. How to remove acrylic paint from clothes?
    Hi,

Even though there are products like oops, goof off and others that claim to remove paint it's nearly impossible to get it out of clothing. The paint absorbs so rapidly in the material %26amp; is tough enough to clean even when you try within a few minutes.
Try paint thiner or waterless hand cleaner. Then launder in hot sudsy water. It might take few attempts till you get rid of the paint.
Dry Cleaning solvent will do it or naphtha but be careful they are flam able.
I think once it is dry, you are out of luck trying to remove it.

What is your favorite medium to use with acrylic paint?

I have just started working in acrylics. I am learning about the various mediums. I would like to know which ones you like and what effects they are good at doing. What is your favorite medium to use with acrylic paint?
wow, you have a lot to choose from. My favorite brand is Golden, they make great products. Personally I like using matte medium to thin the acrylics to make them brush smoothly or to make them more translucent. I also enjoy using some of their other products, like their modeling gel. If you go to their website they give you a list of their mediums a picture of what they look like mixed and a description of what they do and what they can be mixed with. Very useful.

If you wear gloves the whole time then they should be fine, but you should ask your boss or supervisor to make sure. I'd also like to add that if you can get them, you should probably get ones that aren't that long, at least at first.
I work in a photo lab and we work with chemicals all the time.

What is a good way to take off acrylic nails without too much damage to my own real nails?

Every time I get acrylic nails and take them off they end up really thin and ugly. Is there any way to get the least damage as possible? What is a good way to take off acrylic nails without too much damage to my own real nails?
Most of the reason that your nails end up thinner after application of acrylic nails is that the top layers of your nails are buffed off in order for the acrylic to adhere. Once those layers of your natural nail are removed, there is no way of replacing them, because the nail that you see has already been formed. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this except time for your new nail to grow out. To make your nails feel better in the mean time, make sure that you use hand lotion often, after each time you expose your hands to water. You can also use a more intensive cuticle moisturizing cream or oil to really concentrate on moisturizing your nails, which will encourage healthy new growth. What is a good way to take off acrylic nails without too much damage to my own real nails?
try wiggling the nail from the side until it gets loose, then just take it off

if u dont want damage to ur nails, then wait until they come off on their own
I always have hated when that happens. I think that the best way to do it is to go to the nail salon and get them removed or get a different color. You could also take them off your self with Acetone nail remover and it takes a while but it is better than peeling them of (and much less painful) and then take a base coat or a top clear coat of nail polish and it will make your nails thicker

    hope this helpz =]
You could either go to a nail salon and pay for them to remove them or you can use nail polish remover WITH acetone to remove them. The nail salon will do the same thing essentially. The acetone destroys the acrylic that keeps the nails on.
    use warm acetone
hi there i have calgel nails and to remove them you have to soak cotton wool in acetone and put it over the nail, then cover the nail with tinfoil. the heat helps to speed up the process. do one hand and leave it for about 20 mins. after this the nail should just lift of without destroying your own nails. you could try this for acrylic nails. not sure if it will work but worh a try.
Go to the nail salon to let them do it.
soak them in some nail polish remover that has acetone in it, it may be hard to find because so many dont use it anymore because its a harsh chemical. You can also use warm water but it does not work as well. After you take them off put some lotion on your nails and if they are not too thin you can file the tops.
No lie, the corner of a credit card or gift card... you know those plastic rectangle cards, lol? Yeah, those work good to peel of the acrylic without too much damage.

  • Can I paint acrylic onto a canvas cleaned with turpentine?

I have just cleaned some oil paint off a canvas with turpentine, there is no oil left. I am wondering if it will be ok to paint acrylic onto the the canvas now that it is dry?Can I paint acrylic onto a canvas cleaned with turpentine?
I'm not positive. Most people leave the paint, sand the canvas down and gesso on a few coats. Turpentine may interfere with the acrylic base. Or cause a change in colors over time. What I recommend you do is email both the manufacturers of the turpentine and the brand of acrylic paints you plan to use to ask them about this challenge.

If no one is sure, just save that canvas for another oil painting.

What is the difference between latex and acrylic paint, can i paint cement with acrylic?

i want to paint a cement statue (a pig). i bought acrylic paint, but was later told i should use latex paint. Does this mean i can't paint the cement with acrylic paint? What is the difference between latex and acrylic paint, can i paint cement with acrylic?
First, the difference between latex and acrylic paint. The terms describe two different properties of the paint. Acrylic is a chemical in the paint that gives it a fairly hard, durable finish. Most acrylic paints are water based.

Latex means that the paint contains the base component of rubber, generally a synthetic type of latex. Latex paints are usually water based.

It is quite common to have both in the same paint, so your acrylic paint is likely an acrylic latex. As long as it is exterior paint, that part should be fine.

Masonry products, such as your concrete pig, are very alkaline. In order to have paint stay on for a long time, you really need a masonry primer to balance the ph a bit and seal the surface. Also, piggy should have a good bath first. If there is efflorescence on the surface (looks like blobs of salt), a light etching with muratic acid is in order. If there is no efflorescence, clean with a heavy detergent, dry completely, prime then paint.

You may have to go to a paint store to find the masonry primer, but it is worth the effort as it will make the paint stay on in good condition for much longer than you will get with just a paint. Regular primers do not have the proper chemicals to balance the ph.What is the difference between latex and acrylic paint, can i paint cement with acrylic?
You will want to use an oil-based paint if it is going to be outside. If it will be inside, then you can use either latex or acrylic. Acrylic will last longer, though. So, I think you are on the right track.
You can paint almost anything with acrylic but I would say it is a good idea to mix five parts water to one part PVA and give the cement a couple of coats with that before using any kind of paint on it.

What is the best source for a decent acrylic tank for my water turtles?

I've looked everywhere on the internet but I keep getting things for fish. I need an aquarium that is more wide than it is deep or tall. I've heard from the people at PetCo that going to a reptile expo is a good idea but I don't know where one is going to be happening. My mom was going to build a pond but she didn't want to spend $1000+ on it. They're in a kiddie pool for now but I just wish they could have more space to swim. I'm willing to save up for a good, big one it's just that I don't know WHERE to get one. What is the best source for a decent acrylic tank for my water turtles?
LMAO I HAVE MADE THIS SUGGESTION TO ALOT OF PEOPLE AND I DO IT MYSELF...

I USE A UNDER BED CLEAR STORAGE CONTAINER... ITS LONG AND DEEP ENOUGH THAT THE TURTLE DOESNT CRAWL OUT. JUST BE CAREFUL WITH THE LIGHTING.What is the best source for a decent acrylic tank for my water turtles?
Acrylic tanks are not appropriate for reptiles because the tanks get scratched too easily.
We went to our local home improvement store and had them cut acrylic to the dimensions we wanted.Make sure to tell them what your doing, they can help you decide on the right thickness. Then purchased acrylic compound(its like an acid that melts the 2 pieces together). After that we sealed it with pond silicone that's safe for fish. It sounds like alot but it took us an hour to put together. We also made our own lid with screen and a screen window kit with a wood frame. It was also alot cheaper than any we could buy in these sizes.
you sont have to do that much just get a rubber lining and line an area of your yard that youv'e dug a whole as deep a you desire and surround with rock and vegetation you could check out books on how to make them.
If your kiddie pool is getting tight, you shuold either divide them over a couple of pools, look for stock tanks, or consider an actual pond- indoors or outdoors.

I have only seen a few good looking large commercially made turtle habitats, and the cost is outrageous for the home keeper. You can use pond supplies and build a gorgeous turtle pond in your house (and/or one outside) for far less (even less than $1000- unless it is a big outdoor pond with all the trimmings!)

Another cheap possibility is a home-made, in-house enclosure. The basic idea here will be to use 4x4 or similar 'logs' to make the walls. Put some heavy-duty sheet plastic (pond liner is best) in this space and run it up the walls and over the top. Put a few more logs above this to hold it down, and prevent climb-outs. Fill with water (oh, the cheaper the plastic, the more likely a leak is- you probably want to do this near a floor drain!) Remember- you can't just stack the walls- make sure they are spiked together.

Now, all you need is water, lighting, filtration, basking sites, etc. and some decor (for your sake mostly).

What is the best way to put on acrylic nails at home?

I'm using white tips and have a box kit, but want more information. What is the best way to put on acrylic nails at home?
ONE BY ONE, ONE AT EACH FINGER...GLUE IT WEL !!!LOLWhat is the best way to put on acrylic nails at home?
    Use a nail gun
You just have to follow the directions on the box. I suggest having someone help you. It is not an easy task to do by yourself.
read the direction that come w/ it. its very easy. i am not going to type it all out for you since you have it in your kit already. if not, check out their web site from the brand that you got it from and should some where on their has the format. i am sure you have the rough idea on how they go on. its very easy. i do it all the time to myself and to others.
Use acrylic hammer.. Works every time.
have someone check to make sure they are not crooked
if u want them to stay on longer buff the shine off your regular nail and when u glue them on make sure no air bubbles appear between the nails. this could cause a nail fungus if air bubbles are present. put the acrilic on thin and evenly.
i like arlic nails but they are sharp and pointed and harmful!

Can you maintain acrylic nails yourself from home?

I want to get acrylic nails but can't afford to go every 2 or 3 weeks for fills. Can I get something from Sally's or somewhere else that I can maintain them myself? I want them to look nice and I do believe I could learn to do it. Has anyone else done it themselves? Can you maintain acrylic nails yourself from home?
I would strongly discourage you from using that stuff if you haven't received proper training. If you don't use it properly, you can risk getting fungus underneath your nail, damage your nail permanently, or even possibly get over exposed to the product which will leave you allergic to acrylics permanently. Also if you have small children the smell will really bother them and possibly make them sick.

It's not worth itCan you maintain acrylic nails yourself from home?
not really because although u may be able to buy the gel u must also have those brushes that spin really fast to shape your nails.

I guess you can buy those brushes but i think theyre pretty expensive.

You pour it into a small bowl and soak your fingers in it. After awhile it will loosen the acrylic nails and you'll be able to take them off. The acetone is found in nail polish remover.
I just had to do this last month...so here it goes: you pour a generous amount of acetone into a ceramic/glass bowl and soak your fingertips for about 10 minutes. Then you shimmy an orange cuticle stick (wooden stick with a wedge shape on one end) into one of the edges of the nails near the cuticle and start to gently push the acrylic nail off. It is mildly painful and timely but hopefully when you're done you'll be pleased.
i tried doing that but i found that it just made things worse..the nails melted and i soaked them for 5 hours n they wudnt come off...the best thing to do is get it removed professionally cuz chances are where u gt it they have the stronger acetone or just wait until they fall off..mine fell off aftr 3 weeks from getting dem done

  • How would you clean a fifty year old acrylic painting?

I have several paintings, all about 50 years old. Most of them are acrylic, but some of them are oil. They have been kept in unsightly conditions for a number of years now, and are very dusty and dirty. The varnish layer that was put on top has begun to crack in circular patterns, and dust has collected in them. How would you clean this painting? How would you clean a fifty year old acrylic painting?
Cleaning pictures is a highly skilled and specialist activity, trying to do it yourself is almost guaranteed to end up as an expensive disaster.

What is the difference between enamel paint and acrylic paint?

What is the basic difference between yesterdays enamel automotive paint and todays acrylic paint.

Would you maintain both the same way? What would you do different? What is the difference between enamel paint and acrylic paint?
It depends on the brand of paint and what state you live in. Different states allow different chemicals in paints.

';Yesterdays Enamel'; as you call it is probably a synthetic (straight enamel) which is a less durable and less glossy paint. It is most commonly used on equipment because it is less expensive. Synthetic enamel is more difficult to spray.

Acrylic enamel is much better, easy to use paint. What is the difference between enamel paint and acrylic paint?
enamel paint is a water based paint ..it is cheaper....where as acrylic is synthetic resin based paint....it is costly compared to enamel.....it depends on what and where yoy would like to apply the paint.....go through manufactures catalogue and literature which will clear your doubts fully....

How often do acrylic nails need to be filled?

I got my acrylics done for the first time in years last week and I don't know when they need to be filled or how often. Can any nail savvy people out there help me out?How often do acrylic nails need to be filled?
You should get them done every two weeks. If you leave them any longer they will be imbalanced and could lift %26amp; cause damage to your natural nail. At least twice a day massage any oil in them to stop them from becoming too brittle. If they start to lift then do not be tempted to pick at them. If you need to remove one before your next appointment then soak off using acetone. The least messy way of doing this is to soak a cotton pad in the acetone %26amp; wrap a little aluminum foil around it %26amp; leave for about 20 minutes. How often do acrylic nails need to be filled?
    every 2 weeks
I would also say every two weeks. My mom and sister have both had acrylics before and they got them filled every two weeks!
Hi. I found that even though I was told around every 2 weeks for infills, I usually needed them every week as my nails appear to be quite oily and therefore the nails lifted or came off by the 2 week mark. . I eventually found that double priming my nail instead of only one coat, really helped me get close to the 2 week mark.. I also find that when I am pregnant my nails last longer... not sure why, but i put it down to the fact that my nails might be a little less oily.. but anyway.. best just to see how you go and work out what's best for you. cheers
it really depends on how fast your nails grow... for the average person, you should go in about every 2 weeks. i often put it off until 3 weeks and they always were fine, but it's really up to you!
i go back every two weeks!! usually i make my next appointment while i'm getting them filled that way the people at the salon can tell me when it's best to come back!
    Usually every 2 weeks.
Usually every 2 weeks but a lot depends on how fast your nails grow and how well the artifical nails are holding on. My nails grow really fast so they wouldn't even make it past 10 days. However, the nail tech that I was using (they moved BOOHOO) did an amazing job, the things still looked great with no lift 3 weeks later. Just keep an eye on them, if they are lifting and you are seeing the grow out part, it's time to get a fill job.

Can I use acrylic sheets for a guinea pig cage?

I couldn't find coroplast or linoleum for the bottom of my wire cube cage so I bought acrylic sheets from home depot instead. I was wondering if there were any dangers with using acrylic and if it was toxic in any way? In addition, what can I use for the side walls so the bedding doesn't fall out either? Can I use acrylic sheets for a guinea pig cage?
Acrylic is non toxic, its used in acrylic fillings, bone cements, baths etc.

However a sheet of smooth acrylic might be a little slippy under foot.....

Yes it could be used for the side walls but remember not to make a box out of it with out plenty of air holes !Can I use acrylic sheets for a guinea pig cage?
I don't know about the acrylic, but I would think it would be ok. Guinea pig cages have plastic on the bottom which seems like it would be equal to acrylic. For the side walls, I put my cage into a large, shallow, plastic under the bed storage tub. It helped a lot, even though my cage was plastic on the bottom.
You can use some old good tape to cover cage walls.

  • Can I use acrylic paint to paint Holiday designs on my window?

Does it was of with soap and water?

If so, should I water it down a but before I paint?

Thanks! Can I use acrylic paint to paint Holiday designs on my window?
Acrylic is a plastic paint. If your windows are in the sun, and you use the paint full strength, it might cause the paint to peel off! If you use the acrylic, water it down before applying, it will be easier to clean off. Acrylic paint is water based and clean up with soap and water. You can use tempra paints, but be careful not to apply them thick or they will flake off.Can I use acrylic paint to paint Holiday designs on my window?
it might wash off with water or nailpolish remover but that could ruin any painted trim or boarder or it could maybe be scraped off but i wouldnt risk it... usually if you go to a craft store they sell window paint in a lot of colors or sets with stensils.... they also usually have those sticky things that almost look like a thin slice of jello in holiday shapes %26amp; colors that are meant for windows if you wanted another easy option
You could use acrylic, but the clean up will be awful. It will wash off with soap and water and a LOT of effort-or razor blades. Plus makes a BIG mess with paint flakes. Use tempora paint-water based and much easier cleanup. When you clean up, use painters tape to fasten a plastic drop cloth to the window sill. Red can stain light colored paint ( your house), you dont want your mom to kill you! Plus with the drop cloth you can clean up easier!

How do you clean an afghan made of acrylic yarn?

Smoke is the main stain.I'd like to clean in my tub and hang dry.How do you clean an afghan made of acrylic yarn?
You can hand wash in your tub BUT lay it flat to dry or it will stretch out of shape. You CAN wash it in the washer on a gentle cycle if you have a washer with a GENTLE cycle. I have learned this through experience at home, my Grandmother and my daughter crochet. Also, I worked as an operations manager for a dry cleaners for 3 years. How do you clean an afghan made of acrylic yarn?
I am afghan and we just take it to the backyard, hang it on a clothline and hit it with our hands. ;)

    Good Luck.
I have been trying to crochet alot recently with this type of yarn :)

and reading the yarn's care paper, it says to wash in warm, on the gentle cycle. And tumble dry on low heat. Do not over dry.
    ru serious?
It is perfectly fine to wash it in the washing machine. Use a gentle cycle and barely warm water and mild detergent. Then put into the dryer until completely dry. Just use a low heat cycle on the dryer. It's best to dry it this way as it shrinks the yarn back into shape after the wash. We have washed ours this way for years with really great results. Don't forget the fabric softener. Wouldn't recommend hanging it on a clothesline as that will stretch it out of shape.
Acrylic yarn does not shrink. Cotton shrinks http://www.crochetme.com/Aug_Sept_2005/f鈥?/a> and wool felts http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter02/FEAT鈥?/a>

To remove smoke odors, try http://www.febreze.com

To get your blanket closer to its original size, try blocking http://www.knitty.com/issuewinter02/FEAT鈥?/a> (But keep in mind that blocking can only do so much!)
I wash my afghan all the time. I put it in the washing machine on gentile cycle with mild detergent, warm or cold water. Take out immediately when done. Do Not hang, it will stretch and look out of shape. Put it in the dryer on air-dry or delicate cycle. Take out of dryer right at the end of cycle and fold.
Acrylic is essentially plastic. It should not shrink. Once it has shrunk it should not get smaller. If you stretch it to get the size closer to original it's going to have a thin knobby feel to it because the fibers of the yarn have still gone closer together you can not loosen that. When you do wash it try Woolite which is gentle and may help loosen the ';weave'; and return some of the size. Good luck

Well, I had this same problem and it just tore my nails up so badly. The best thing to do is go to a professional and have them remove them..because if you try to do it yourself, you'll probably make your nails very brittle and ugly. lol but if you have to do it yourself, use the strongest acetone nail polish remover you can find and soak your nails until theyre soft and easy to come off. then file down the surface of your nails to make them smooth again and put on clear polish that helps make them strong again. Best of luck to you on that and your new job!!!

soak them in nail polish remover they should come off. (the nail polish remover has to have acetone in it)
Soak your nails enhancements in pure acetone , no polish remover, to cover the nail, for 20 to 30 minutes, or as long as needed to remove the enhancement product. use a wooden or metal pusher to gently push off the softened nail plate. Avoid removing the enhancement out the acetone, because the product get quickly reharden. making them more difficult to remove.

Is there any way to get dried waterbased acrylic paint off of clothing?

I accidently spilled waterbased green acrylic paint on my pants and on the carpet but I was able to get the stain out of the carpet while the paint was still wet... sacrificing my favorite shorts in the process. So is there any way to get this stain out?Is there any way to get dried waterbased acrylic paint off of clothing?
Not really because acrylic dries to a plastic finish. The best I can suggest is trying to scrape or dislodge the paint from the fibres by using a blade or old toothbrush. This might well damage your shorts. You'll have to decide whether it's worth the bother.

Saving your carpet was the cheaper and most sensible option.

What is the proper way to trim down acrylic nails?

I have had acrylic nails for several years and I routinely visit the nail salon every three weeks. The problem is that I am taking the CA Bar Exam next week and my nails are feeling a little to long to allow me to type as fast as possible during the exam. I have an appointment at the salon the day after the exam, but I need to trim them down a bit for the exam itself, and I wont have time to get into the salon.

It really doesn't matter if they are pretty, but I would prefer it if they didn't crack or snag on things. Would normal clippers and a file work? Or, I was also noticing that my clippers for my dog's nails are similar to the clippers the salon uses, would those work just to trim them down a bit?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)What is the proper way to trim down acrylic nails?
I'm assuming you aren't going to grt them filled before the exam.Whatever you do don't use nailclippers. It will crack the acrylic. All you need to do is get a file and buffer and just file the acrylic down then make sure you buff the endsWhat is the proper way to trim down acrylic nails?
Use a fingernail file, that's what I always use, regular clippers may crack them and I don't know if I'd use the dog clippers.
Please do yourself a favor! I took the bar exam myself; you will be stressed out enough!! Take 30 minutes, walk into a nail salon , have them cut and filed!!! You don't know me, but you will thank me!
Maybe you could just file them?
Yes, use your dog's, that one is similar and the nails won't crack like using the normal clipper. Then, file them, after that buff them and shine. Wear a light color enamel.
    go to the nail salon
DO NOT try to file them yourself. You can damage them or even damage your nail.

go back to the nail salon and have them trim it down for you. That is the best and pretty much only way
what i always do is just get a good file and cozy on the couch with your favorite show and file away, dont clip them with the wrong clippers bc it will crack the acrylic all the way down and you will be left with a horrible looking nail! but i think the dog clippers might work but just be SUPER CAUTIOUS! please, i hate it when ppl have raggidy looking nails. lol good luck

Here is a link that may be of some help to you in finding a top notch salon in your area. This is a salon locator, and it is provided by a company called CND (Creative Nail Design). This company has been providing the nail industry with top quality profesional nail products since the late 1970's. It also provides high quality training for nail technicians. In fact, all of the techs/salons listed on the salon locator page have been company trained, and certified prior to their placement on this list.

I looked up Australia in the locator. It lists the names, and the contact information of two CND distributors, and it advises people to contact one of them. They will be able to supply you with the names, and contact info for any good techs/salons in your area.

By the way, I have no association with this company, nor do I profit in any way by providing the link, or from your use of it - if you choose to do so. I am providing it strictly for informational purposes. Thus, I am NOT a spammer.

  • Can I use acrylic paint on clothes instead of fabric paint?

I don't have any fabric paint, and I was wondering if I could just use normal acrylic paint instead, because that's all I have. If I do use acrylic, will it wash off or dye other clothes in the wash? A friend put acrylic on his sweatshirt, and it never came off. Plus, whenever I get acrylic on clothes, it doens't come off. So what do you think? Thanks for your time! Can I use acrylic paint on clothes instead of fabric paint?
I have gotten some acrylic paint on my favourite shirt, and it didn't come off. This was artist paint... not wall paint. (I wonder if there is much difference.) Acrylic paint mixes with water, so you can thin it out a bit if you want. I would not put on a thick coat of paint anyway. It may work better on a slightly damp fabric. Try it out on an old T-shirt, let it dry, wash it and dry it. I think once it is dried, it never comes off. It never washes off, never got on anything, and hasn't faded at all. I never put anything into the dryer so I can't tell you what would happen there, but I don't think there would be much damage. Can I use acrylic paint on clothes instead of fabric paint?
Paint with acrylic (I use The Works cheapie!) put something in between both layers of a T-shirt before painting, let dry.

Acrylic and fabric paint are pretty much the same thing. You COULD use the base stuff that ';makes'; acrylic into fabric paint, but the difference in the dried texture is only very very slight. No matter which one you use, the result will be pretty stiff unless you use something specialized like Dye-Na-Flow.

    So in a word, yes!

How can I tell if my painting is acrylic or oil?

I bought a painting at a garage sale, the person didn't know what type of paint was used.

How can I tell if it was painting with acrylic or oil paint? How can I tell if my painting is acrylic or oil?
by testing its chemical composition. Lot of artists use acrylics that look like oils and you can't see a difference. Take it to a antique shop and they might tell you. But visually it might be impossible. Also some artists use both acrylics and oil in the same painting. acrylics for washes and oils for highlights

good luckHow can I tell if my painting is acrylic or oil?
    Smell it.
close your eyes.feel the texture.oils have much thicker lines and ridges usually.acrylics are usually silky feeling.oils also show blended and shaded colors much smoother to the eye.acrylics are sometimes more opaque.
Oil tends to be grainer than acrylic and sharper as well if this makes sense - acrylics can also have the same effect but when dried they tend to feel smoother.

How to remove acrylic paint from table top?

From what I can remember there isn't an easy way to do it, I've scrapped off some but there's still some spots that are stuck. Is there a secret trick? How to remove acrylic paint from table top?
try using a paint stripping product such as zip strip or stripeze. How to remove acrylic paint from table top?
If it is water based acrylic paint, start with the least abrasive solvent which would be D Natured Alcohol. You can also use rubbing alcohol as someone else has mentioned. The difference between Thinner and Solvent is that Solvent will clean up the paint after it is dry but thinner will not. If a stronger solvent is needed, try Goof Off or Lacquer thinner. The reason to start with the mild solvent is to hopefully save the finish on the table top. If you end up stripping the table finish including the stain, you can possibly match the stain a Home Depot and refinish it with polyurethane. Hope this helps.
If you are talking about acrylic paint as in craft paint, it softens easily with warm water. I would place a wet rag on it for a few minutes. If your table is wood however, you may not be able to leave something wet on it for more than a minute or two. You might want to try some rubbing alcohol. Do not use nail polish remover because it will remove the tables finish if it is wood.
I was going to suggest scraping... it depends on how much. Try Goo Gone and scrubbing. Goo Gone usually gets everything off of anything. Some paint thinner might, or you could resort to using an extra-fine sanding block from Lowes or Home Depot, and possibly refinishing the table if it was varnished.

    Good luck! :-)

How do you repair deep gouges in an acrylic bathtub?

    UK solutions desired. Thanks!

We bought a new bathroom suite and it's gorgeous. But the shower knob was not put on tightly, and when we turned it on the first time it bounced into the bathtub below. It's a very heavy knob and when it fell it bounced twice - creating two massive cuts deep in the acrylic.

Does anyone know what might repair these?

Thanks in advance! How do you repair deep gouges in an acrylic bathtub?
A small amount of epoxy resin can be mixed up and colour matched to your tub. Mask around the damaged area and apply resin. Let it set hard. Sand back lightly with wet and dry paper (320 then 600 grit) then polish it with automotive cut and polish and finally a straight car polish. If you colour matched it perfectly, it will be an invisible repair. How do you repair deep gouges in an acrylic bathtub?

What's the best non toxic water based acrylic paint for decorating wooden tables that will be used for meals?

I would like to paint children's designs on tables that will be used in a magical classroom for eating on. I suppose they will have to be sealed with a water based polyurethane of some sort, but mostly I need to know the best brand of paints to get the most beautiful colors. Any experienced furniture painters out there? What's the best non toxic water based acrylic paint for decorating wooden tables that will be used for meals?
I used liquitex brand acrylics when painting a table for a local coffee shop and it turned out beautifully. Personally I find golden brand acrylics too thick but their colors are wonderful. Liquitex is a little thinner which is good for covering large areas. I've never had much of a problem with fading over time either. For the most part acrylic paints are pretty non-toxic to my knowledge, also whatever coating you put on the table to protect the paintings will provide a protective barrier against any leeching of pigments.

The only thing I will caution you against is that the knot holes in the wood actually shows through the paint over time. When I did my project If I had primed the table with a good coat of gesso that could have been avoided, so prime your tables well :)What's the best non toxic water based acrylic paint for decorating wooden tables that will be used for meals?
i woud go with a water based 2 part epoxy.......typically its used on garage floors i use it every day for that prpose as i own a concrete coatings company...its extremely durable very long lasting and very strong...i get all mine from scots paint
I took a clear epoxy and finished some trim on a boat... I took clear urethane and finished some other trim on the same boat.... the epoxy chalked inside 6 months and the urethane lasted 2 years before beginning to chalk...

Restaurant surfaces are frequently coated with an epoxy... but my experience is that Urethane is better

As for acrylic paint I think Golden is the best.

I just removed my artificial nails too. There are some great products that you can use to get your nails back to full health after freeing them from artificial nails/wraps/acrylics.

Nailtiques is a great brand to try. It's a bit pricey -- running between $7-$10 a bottle. I am using Sally Hansen's ';Nail Protex.'; That one's a bit cheaper -- running about $4 per bottle.

Both of these products are excellent, available in drugstores like CVS, and will help to strengthen and repair your nails back to where they were before artificial nails came into your life.

Believe me, I know what you're dealing with. I can say that I am very happy with the Sally Hansen Protex. Within three days, my nails felt thicker and stopped hurting from the artificial nail removal.

    Good luck!
use a filer, and file on the surface of your nails.

Can you fix a small crack on an acrylic Eclipse 6 gallon aquarium?

It is on the side of the Bowfront aquarium about 1 1/2'; long from the top. Is there a way to seal this? If I just put a piece of tape on the outside will that stop the crack from spreading? Can you fix a small crack on an acrylic Eclipse 6 gallon aquarium?
There is a specific ';glue'; that is used on acrylic, it's called weld-on16. It is a solvant and sort of melts the acrylic all together. You can get it here: http://www.rplastics.com/weldon16.html

I've tried using it on a cheap-o 6 gallon tank that I picked up at a yard sale and was cracked on one side from the top to the bottom. And while I made quite a mess of it and looks terrible, it holds water without leaks and makes a fabulous little quarantine/hospital tank.

The weld-on will seal the crack and keep it from spreading. Can you fix a small crack on an acrylic Eclipse 6 gallon aquarium?
you can use a silicone sealant to fix this. super glue could also work if the opening is big enough for you to squeeze in the nozzle of the superglue.
Tape won't work, I tried it. lol. This will sound crazy, people say super glue, havent tried it though. Some even say nail acrylic. I know it's crazy sounding but there is a windshield glue that starts with ';Z';, and you can buy it at any Auto zone, you just tell them you are looking for the windshield crack consealor and the name starts with Z and is 4.95 a tube and it works wonderfully and you don't see that there was ever any cracks of any size or shape and this works excellent on your windows of your house and car too, no air or water gets in either. :)
No larger than it is, I'd just use aquarium silicons. Get a sharpe object, and from the inside sort of drill a little hole at the pouint the crack ends, Same principle as Novus Windshield Repair. Run a bead of silicone down the crack and gently apply pressure to it with your finger, making sure it gets up in the hole you created good. Give her 3-4 days and you should be set!

Take a brush, dip it in thinner, and use that to remove the paint. You probably can't sand the car considering it has lots of curves and contours, so just remove it with thinner. Sanding will also remove plastic, which isn't good.

How long will acrylic latex paint last in the original can?

I have some acrylic latex paint that I would like to use to paint a piece of furniture. I believe the paint is about 8 years old.How long will acrylic latex paint last in the original can?
Open it up and check to see if it is lumpy or has a foul odor. If it is incredibly thick, it might have dehydrated over time. you can add about 1 tbsp of water if it seems thick. No more than this though because it will prevent proper adhesion for your furniture. If it looks like a normal consistency, and isn't lumpy you are probably good. If the can was metal and it became rusty, there might be rust shards in the paint. They sell paint strainers for less than a dollar at many places. This will get any of that debris out of your paint.

If you want a professional opinion most paint stores will look at it for you (sometimes even if it isn't theirs). They can also shake it for you for free. Shaking can release the solids that have settled to the bottom a lot easier than stirring. So I recommend this approach.

I want to paint a basic seascape using acrylic paints on canvas can anyone give me any tips on how to start?

I just want sky, horizon, sea and maybe sand in foreground. Something simple to hang on the wall. I am an amateur!I want to paint a basic seascape using acrylic paints on canvas can anyone give me any tips on how to start?
    1. Start with the research, take photos at different times of day. you will get the same view but in different shades, moods and colours. preferably sunrise and sunset 5-9pm?

    2. sketch out a few that you like with coloured pencils and pick the one that has the best colours and mood for you. (one you will want to look at again and again)

    3. draw on paper a large scale version to the size canvas you have.

    4. with your canvas (a horizon shaped canvas would go best) map out using the paper drawing as best you can onto the canvas.

    5. choose your meduim and the way you want to apply it, wether you want to dab, speck ,stroke or block the colour on with any shaped brush (make sure its a good one!!)

    6. start with the lighter areas first its best to start on the sky and sea then the fore-ground so you dont get over lapping (will not look dimentional if you start from the front first) then gradulatly build up the shade/colour chart to finally the darkest shade.

    7. dont try and make it as accurate as possible, its not a photo, your in control making it to be a total one off!!

p.s one colour can be a build up of lots of colours, i.e green can have yellows and brown shades and blue can have purples and pale yellows.

good luck and i hope i made some sense!!!I want to paint a basic seascape using acrylic paints on canvas can anyone give me any tips on how to start?
Edge of a cliff with tall grasses, some broken-down fence, blue sky with seagulls flocking overhead, a shore with some silhouettes of children running along towards a beach hut, a boat in the far-away distance
Imagine you are the sea. Don't 'try' to paint a particular picture - just think 'sea' and let it happen and it will.

Remember, there is no right or wrong, no good or bad painting and it's got nothing to do with being an amateur or a professional. The most important thing is that you enjoy what you create.

    Think 'sea' and have fun.
start with blue, open the lid dip the brush and viola
You might want to play around w/some colored pencil sketches first, to get an idea of what you'd like to do (%26amp; also to see if any problems might come up as a result of it.) I find seascapes relatively easy to do, however, so there's nothing wrong w/just going for it.

Remember, though, that the water reflects the color of the sky, so if you're doing a sunset scene, the water needs to reflect that.
consider using things like an acrylic retarder. acrylics dry incredibly fast. the retarder will slow the drying time. you might also want to consider mixing some actual sand in your paint to create a nice sand-esque texture.

i agree with the premilinary sketches. this is always a great idea no matter how amateur or professional you are.

    good luck.

oh, and when you're done, do another. always do another. you'll never get better without making another one.
Sketch your painting in chalk or light pencil. Decide which elements you will emphasize. Start with the background, probably sky, then water. Fill in sand, waves, clouds, etc. Add details (people?) - rocks, trees, shells. Finish with highlights on water.

    Good luck!
you first have to draw what you want to draw on the canvas by pencil and then you start colouring

My friend awhile back told me that there are 3 colors you have to mix, but now I can't remember. What is the best way to mix basic acrylic paint colors to get the color of Caucasian skin?
I have been painting for a long time and the colors I use for my portraits are

    a lot of Titanium White

    A lot of Yellow Ochre

a little bit of cadium red light

I take yellow ochre and add a lot of white to it about the same amount or more and then just a drop of cadium red light (cadiums are very strong pigments so be cereful don't add too much).

For highlights I add more white sometimes I mix a little yellow into it and for shadow and receding planes I use raw umber and some blue like ultramarine blue.

I paint in oils but the acrylics are the same pigments so you should get the same results. When I painted in school lot of the people used acrylics and got the same effects

Check out my web site http://www.piotrwolodkowicz.com and see if you like the skin tones.

good luckWhat is the best way to mix basic acrylic paint colors to get the color of Caucasian skin?
    orange, white and pink
You should be using only colours that are found in the spectrum to get your colours, not ';bottled/tubed'; colours, to truly learn how to paint. Getting ';flesh'; coloured paint is cheating. Even using ';pink'; or pre mixed sienna colours, etc. is cheating. to get a caucasian flesh colour mix red, yellow and white (not too much yellow).
I would mix beige, white and a little orange or pink.
burnt sienna, a touch of red and white. mix until you have a basic flesh tone add a little green to make a shadow tone. highlight would be a Little more white added with just a little touch of green.
Orange and white to start. You can add red, blue and orange to achieve different tones.

What type of acrylic paint for a mural in a bedroom?

I am making a dinosaur theme in my sons bedroom and I already painted the background.

I ussually paint woth oils but logically I am using acrylics. So far I have use the cheap crafts paints that come in a small round bottle, but I was hoping I could use regular acrylics like the ones people use for canvas, such as golden or liquitex.

Would those be alright for the wall?

Any advice before I start would be appreited. What type of acrylic paint for a mural in a bedroom?
The main difference between an expensive acrylic and a cheap one is in the proportion of medium and pigment...the more pigment the more opaque the color and the finer the pigment will have been ground prior to bonding with the medium. Often with a cheap color you will find yourself coating twice or more to get opaque coverage when you want it . This is a problem for me so I buy a mix of brands ...when I want good first time coverage I pay the price necessary to get it. You will find this problem exaggerated in the more expensive colors such as cadmiums. Any of them will work well on the wall just don't thin them out until they are flat looking...this reduces the colors intensity and makes it easier to rube of as it doesn't have enough medium [binder] in it . If you paint this way you might consider putting a coat of medium over all to seal it.What type of acrylic paint for a mural in a bedroom?
If my mom painted dinosaurs on my bedroom wall when I was a kid, I'd think she was the greatest mom in the world. Oil paint sounds too involved for what you're doing. Use acrylics and they wash easier (just don't use hot water). Liquidtex used to make a series called Basics. Real good paint and cheap too. Perfect for what you're doing. But overall, most larger art stores and most craft stores carry cheap quality acrylic paints that will make your mural look really good. Smaller stores will be pricier, naturally. Don't forget to pick up a roll of film or camera while you're there. You're painting a kid's bedroom, and your son will grow out of it in a few short years, but be sure to take pictures of it for him. One day he'll be really glad and grateful you did!
Acrylics would be fine, I've used them for this exact thing, and they are very durable.

Just be aware that some colors may contain toxic pigments (cadmium, lead) so if your son is a wall-licker, avoid those.
the small bottle type you're using may be best for fun projects and not as costly, the tube acrylics for canvas can be used, yet possibly more costly for this type of mural, if large amount , there large containers, check various stores in your area like walmart, craft , or dollar stores,

Has anyone tips for using shading technique using acrylic paints?

I like to use extensive shading to create three dimensional affects when painting. Using acrylics is new to me! Do I start with the lighter colour and work the various shading colours in layers over the top? Will that work, or is the whole thing going to smudge? Also, when the work is completed, can I varnish the canvas, to give it a glossy and cleanable finish?Has anyone tips for using shading technique using acrylic paints?
    i've never varnished a canvas.

but like the other dude said, go from dark to light. if you don't want it to smudge, don't use a TON of water. and it's best not to use paints straight from the tube. try blending them a little on your palette before applying to the canvas.

--remember to make the edges and corners of your painting darkest, this will draw in people's eyes to your main focus point.

--if your brush has a ton of paint in it, wash it out. having it clogged with paint isn't good no matter what you're doing.Has anyone tips for using shading technique using acrylic paints?
It's usually better to go from dark to light. You can even clear coat with different media between coats for a deeper effect. I've never tried using varnish on canvas, I usually use a spray clear coat.

I haven't had either but I wanted to know whats the difference between them. Not just the fact that ones made out of gel and the other is made out of acrylic. What's the difference between gel and acrylic nails?
I've never had gel nails, but according to my shiny new cosmetology textbook, there really isn't enough of a practical difference to justify spending that much more. Gel is a newer technique, and it isn't supposed to smell as strongly as acrylics do during application, but acrylics are supposed to be a bit more durable. Gel also requires a uv light to set.

Of course, the best way to know the difference would be to ask the salon about it.What's the difference between gel and acrylic nails?
Acrylic is a harder substance. Gel is more flexible. My experience is that gel doesn't hold as well as acrylic.
try both and see which suits you better.

What is the difference between silicone and acrylic sealant?

I am installing a shower door and the instructions state that silicone sealant should be used. My local DIY store only has acrylic. Does that matter? What is the difference between silicone and acrylic sealant?
There are many good sealants these days. 100% silicone is still the best choice for your shower. It should say ';Tub %26amp; Tile'; or ';Kitchen a %26amp; Bath'; because they have mold inhibitors in them. These silicones are not paintable. The acrylics are paintable but don't generally last as long in the wet conditions of your shower. They also don't generally have mold inhibitors in them. There are some paintable silicones but I have never seen one that had mold inhibitors. There are other less flexible caulks used in showers. They are cheaper for a reason. I don't recommend the cheap, hardening type of caulk for anything. What is the difference between silicone and acrylic sealant?
Yes. Silicone resists moisture as well as temperature changes, acrylic does not. Over time acrylic will suffer cracks and allow moisture in and out.
acrylic dries over time to a hard shell like skin....silicone will stay pliable much longer....silicone is paintable, use it all the time.....but u shouldnt need to paint.....we install about 25 shower unit and doors a year...we use silicone but one that is only used for showers..$12.00 a tube, u can use the regular silicone that u can get at lowes and such......

What is the best way to remove acrylic nails?

I just got the acrylics put on and i was wondering if theres anything that you can do to help you take them off! What is the best way to remove acrylic nails?
Soak them in acetone and then remove them when they soften. You could also go to a nail salon and they will remove them for a fee. What is the best way to remove acrylic nails?
Acrylic nails look great and can be a life saver for those with weak nails or nails that just won鈥檛 grow well on their own. But like all things, even wearing acrylic nails must come to an end eventually. Follow these easy steps to safely and painlessly remove your acrylic nails.

    Instructions

    Things You鈥檒l Need:

    * Plastic garbage bag

    * Acetone polish remover

    * Petroleum jelly

    * Nail buffer

    * Nail clippers

    * Glass bowl

Step 1 : Find a good work area where you can sit down and be comfortable. A kitchen table works perfectly for this. Be sure to cover the surface of your table with a plastic garbage bags and a thick layer of newspaper to soak up spills and prevent damage to your table鈥檚 surface.

Step 2 :Get all your supplies ready at hand. You don鈥檛 want to be hunting for them mid nail removal. Have them all spread out in front of you on the table.

Step 3: Using a pair of nail clippers, cut the acrylic nails down as short as possible to make the removal easier.

Step 4 : Fill a glass bowl with nail polish remover (the type with acetone in it). This will be used to soak your nails in and dissolve the nail glue which attached your acrylic nails to your natural ones.

Step 5 :Before dunking your nails apply a coating of petroleum jelly to the skin surrounding your nails. This will help prevent the skin from drying out while soaking in the polish remover. Just be sure you don鈥檛 get any on the nail or it will block the polish remover from loosening the glue.

Step 6 : Dip your fingers into the bowl of nail polish remover and continue to soak them for 15-20 minutes.

Step 7 : Remove your hands and try to gently peel the acrylic nails off. If you are met with resistance and any or all of the acrylic nails do not easily peel off, submerge your fingers in the polish remover again and soak for another five minutes. Never force a nail to come off if it鈥檚 not ready.

Step 8 : After re-soaking you should be able to remove any stubborn acrylic nails and will now be left with only your natural nails.

Step 9 : Thoroughly was your hands in order to remove any polish remover residue and the petroleum jelly.

Step 10 : If any of the nail glue remains on your nails, simply buff this off with a nail buffer. Be gentle and use a light touch to avoid damaging your natural nails.

Step 11: Apply a moisturizing hand cream to your hands and massage in well. This will help replace any lost moisture from the acetone polish remover.

    Tips %26amp; Warnings

    * Never force an acrylic nail off of your natural one. You risk damaging your own nail, or worse, ripping off your natural nail with the acrylic one.

Polish remover or hot water will not work. You have to use pure acetone.

Pour some into a glass bowl and soak for about 20 minutes. Use an orangewood stick to scrape off the loosened product. Soak and scrape until it's all off.

You will have to do one hand at a time. Keep the nails in the acetone when scraping as it will start to harden if you remove them.

If your acrylics have a gel overlay then you will have to file the nail to break the gel seal. If you don't, no amount of soaking will penetrate the gel.

You can use a very fine buffer after all the product is off to smooth out your nails.

    Good luck!
You just had them put on, now you want to take them off? Why? Whatever...Skip the nail polish remover. It's not strong enough. Use 100% pure acetone. Soak for at least a half hour. The acrylic should be softened enough by then to genthy scrape it off with an orange stick.
Let them soak in acetone for 20 mintunes and slowly lift them up, don't peel them quickly or you might catch skin, ouchie!
