Regular photo frames are not thick enough to hold your average painting. Painting also don't need to be covered in glass, they generally are protected with a layer of good varnish that's appropriate for the type of paint used. If you go to a craft store like Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or Aaron Brothers, you'll find backless frames that can hold canvas's. People there also frame paintings all the time so I'm sure if you ask they'll show you the best frames to use for your paintings. How do you frame oil and acrylic paintings?
Personally, I don't frame my paintings on canvas- I paint the sides black and attach hooks %26amp; wire to the back to hang them. When I paint on linen I just hang them free, I don't bother to even stretch the linen onto a frame. Old wooden frames look nice without the glass or any type of plain, wooden frame- just take out the glass.. metal frames tend to look tacky and take away from the paintings. check out the Metropolitan Museum of Art's website to see how painters framed their work.
